The busy harbour town of Porthmadog is a mere 3 miles away and is full of individual shops and places to eat. The nearest supermarkets are in the town.
The historic castle towns of Harlech and Criccieth are well worth a visit with both having impressive castles open to the public.
Just through Harlech is the village of Llanfair with the 100 year old slate mine and a summer season children's farm park. The stunning views from Llanfair are across Pen Sarn harbour towards Shell Island.
Portmeirion and Castell Deudraeth less than 2 miles away.
A full day can be spent exploring the village, gardens and the woodland areas. Two cafés and a restaurant help make the day.
Plas Brondanw was the home to Clough Williams-Ellis, architect of Portmeirion.
The house and gardens are open to the public and are only 5 minutes away.
The Ffestiniog steam railway has a station at the top of the village where you can board the train. The trains begin their journey from the main station at Porthmadog harbour travelling to Blaenau Ffestiniog.
A trip to the Llechwedd Slate Caverns, with its amazing underground lake, can be incorporated into the itinerary before catching the train back down the mountain.
Now re-built, the Welsh Highland Railway travels from Caernarfon and links up to the
Ffestiniog Railway at Porthmadog. In total this gives 40 miles of track through the
incredible scenery of the Snowdonia National Park.
Another railway worth a visit is the Snowdon Mountain Railway. This is the easy
way to get to the top of Mount Snowdon, though no less scenic. It takes approx.
45 minutes from Penrhyndeudraeth to Llanberis to catch the train up Snowdon. The road journey along lake sides and through the mountains is truly amazing.
The main beaches nearby are at Harlech and Black Rock Sands at Morfa Bychan, both within a 15 minute drive of Penrhyndeudraeth. They offer miles of sandy beach with safe bathing and a mountain back drop. The sands by Portmeirion with rock pools are great fun and accessed from Portmeirion village.
Sygun Copper Mine is situated in the picturesque village of Beddgelert and offers a rare opportunity for all the family to discover the wonders of an historic copper mine. Also on offer are lakeside walks, pottery painting, archery, panning for gold, trampolining, a bouncy castle, an adventure playground and a museum of antiquities.
